Vienna is the federal capital of Austria and also the most populous city in Austria. Around 2.6 million people live in the greater Vienna area, which is equivalent to around a quarter of the total Austrian population. Architecturally, Vienna is still dominated by the buildings around the Viennese Ringstraße dating back to the early days, but also by Baroque and Jugendstil. Through its role as imperial capital and residence of the Austrian Empire from 1804, Vienna became a cultural and political center of Europe in the 19th century. The historical center of Vienna as well as the Schönbrunn Palace belong today to the UNESCO world cultural heritage. Vienna is now am international congress and meeting place for more than 30 international organizations (such as OPEC, IAEA, OSCE) and is one of the world cities. Vienna is also famous for its lively nightlife. As soon as it gets dark the streets and squares around the many bars, pubs, clubs and discos begin to populate the city center.
